KB Kookmin Bank Taps JPMorgan’s Kinexys for Global Payments
KB Kookmin Bank becomes the first South Korean institution to use JPMorgan's Kinexys blockchain for faster, 24/7 international corporate payments.
A growing number of traditional financial institutions are integrating digital asset technologies into everyday banking services. This shift aims to accelerate cross-border payments and significantly reduce operational costs.
According to information from Seoul Daily, a new service targeting corporate clients in international trade will utilize the Kinexys platform. Kinexys is JPMorgan’s institutional network, which was known as Onyx until last year.
South Korean Bank Becomes First in the Country to Access Kinexys
KB Kookmin Bank, the banking arm of KB Financial Group, plans to launch the service in August. The bank will be the first financial institution in South Korea to employ JPMorgan’s blockchain infrastructure for international corporate settlements.
In its initial phase, the platform will be available at KB Kookmin branches in South Korea and its Singapore division. The service will initially support US dollar transfers, focusing primarily on companies engaged in import and export activities.
The bank stated that the service will facilitate payments and currency operations across ten key trade markets: the USA, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, India, Thailand, South Africa, and South Korea. These regions represent critical destinations for South Korean exporters who process a high volume of international payments daily.
Targeting Faster International Settlements
The primary advantage of this new service is the dramatic increase in the speed of international payments. Under traditional systems, cross-border bank transfers typically pass through several correspondent banks, with final settlement often taking one to two business days.
Delays frequently worsen during transactions between countries with large time zone differences, such as South Korea, the United States, and Middle Eastern nations. Kinexys enables nearly continuous programmable payments, shortening settlement times and reducing reliance on the operating hours of various financial institutions. This allows companies to access funds faster, optimize liquidity management, and execute international trade deals more efficiently.
For corporate clients, this solution promises shorter payment cycles and greater predictability in cash flow management—a vital factor for large-scale international deliveries.
Blockchain Increasingly Entering Traditional Banking
The partnership between KB Kookmin Bank and JPMorgan serves as another example of blockchain technology becoming part of traditional financial infrastructure. Rather than being used solely for crypto assets, these networks increasingly support real-world banking operations, including international payments, foreign exchange, and inter-institutional settlement.
Kinexys stands as one of the most advanced blockchain platforms for institutional clients. According to JPMorgan data, the network has already processed transactions totaling over $4 trillion, with billions of dollars in operations flowing through it daily. The platform offers high security, automated payment execution, and near-24/7 settlement capabilities, making it highly attractive to banks and large corporations.
The decision by South Korea’s largest banking group to integrate Kinexys suggests that blockchain is no longer viewed as an experiment, but as a legitimate tool for modernizing global financial services. If successful, this initiative could accelerate similar adoptions by other Asian banks seeking faster, more efficient, and more competitive international payment solutions.
