BNB Chain’s X Account Hacked in Phishing Attack, Restored After Small Loss
The official BNB Chain X account, with nearly four million followers, was hacked on Wednesday, leading to the spread of phishing links targeting cryptocurrency wallets.
Hackers used the compromised account to post malicious links disguised as WalletConnect prompts. Binance founder Changpeng “CZ” Zhao quickly confirmed the incident, warning users not to engage.
“The hacker posted a bunch of links to phishing websites that ask for Wallet Connect. Do NOT connect your wallet,” Zhao wrote on X.
BNB Chain’s security teams immediately contacted X to suspend the account and restore control. According to Zhao, takedown requests for the phishing websites were also submitted, while investigations into the exact method of compromise began.
X account restored. Hacker got $13k.
Security team(s) still tracking, with a possible linked KYC. Hacker went through all these trouble, plus criminal liability. He could have made more by building.
Victims will be compensated in full.

Account Restored, Losses Limited
Hours later, Zhao announced that the BNB Chain X account was restored and the hacker had managed to steal approximately $13,000. He noted that Binance security teams are still tracking the attacker, with potential KYC links that could help identify them.
“Victims will be compensated in full,” Zhao stated, adding that while social media security differs from crypto platform protections, most of the Binance and BNB community did not fall for the phishing attempts.
Community Response and Next Steps
Zhao also highlighted the irony of the hack, saying the attacker endured “all this trouble, plus criminal liability” for just $13,000, noting they “could have made more by building.”
Despite the breach, Binance executives expressed gratitude to the community for quickly spreading warnings and minimizing impact. “Thanks to everyone for spreading the word quickly. Onwards!” Zhao wrote in closing.
The BNB Chain security team confirmed they are still investigating the root cause and will share more details as soon as they become available.
