Western Union Launches Stablecard to Bridge Crypto and Visa
Western Union debuts Stablecard, a Visa-linked digital wallet for USDPT stablecoins, launching in 37 markets with plans to reach 60 countries by year-end.
A new product now allows users to receive, store, and spend the USDPT stablecoin by merging blockchain infrastructure with Visa’s traditional payment network.
The service debuted on August 4 across 37 markets, with the company planning to expand coverage to more than 60 countries by the end of the year.
Stablecard Merges Blockchain with Traditional Payments
Stablecard combines a digital wallet with a Visa debit card, enabling users to spend their USDPT funds anywhere Visa cards are accepted. Beyond merchant payments, the card supports cash withdrawals at ATMs and select Western Union locations.
Users can manage their funds directly through a mobile app, eliminating the need for manual conversion to traditional fiat currency before spending. A standout feature is “Cash Redirect,” which allows specific international money transfers sent via Western Union to be automatically converted into USDPT and loaded onto the digital wallet.
USDPT is Backed 1:1 by U.S. Dollars
At the core of the service is USDPT, issued by Anchorage Digital Bank—the first federally chartered crypto bank in the United States. The token is backed one-to-one by U.S. dollars, bank deposits, and short-term U.S. Treasury bills, aiming to maintain a stable value relative to the dollar.
USDPT operates on the Solana blockchain, facilitating near-instant transactions and significantly lower fees compared to traditional international payment methods.
Western Union Expands Its Digital Strategy
With the launch of Stablecard, Western Union continues its transition from a cash-focused remittance company to a provider of digital payment infrastructure.
Integrating stablecoins allows the company to reduce the need for pre-funding international transfers while accelerating settlement across different markets. This shift could improve capital efficiency and lower operational costs for cross-border payments.
Competition in the Stablecoin Sector Intensifies
The release of Stablecard comes as traditional financial institutions increasingly integrate stablecoins into their service offerings. In recent months, major players like Mastercard, Visa, and PayPal have expanded their initiatives in this space, while banks and payment operators accelerate the development of blockchain-based solutions for international settlements.
For Western Union, this is an opportunity to maintain its standing in a cross-border transfer market that is gradually shifting under the pressure of digital assets. Through Stablecard, the company offers an alternative to the traditional remittance model, combining blockchain infrastructure with Visa’s global network and its own established payment ecosystem.
