Western Union has filed a U.S. trademark application for “WUUSD,” just one day after announcing plans to launch a U.S. dollar–backed stablecoin called USDPT on the Solana blockchain.

The filing, submitted on October 29 under serial number 99468604, covers a wide range of digital asset services — including downloadable crypto wallet software, stablecoin-based payment processing, and trading and exchange functionality. According to U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) records, the application was filed by Western Union Holdings Inc. and is currently “awaiting examination.”

Possible Dual Stablecoin Strategy

The move raises questions about how the company intends to differentiate between WUUSD and USDPT, or whether both will coexist under its growing digital asset strategy. Observers suggest that WUUSD could represent a simplified consumer-facing brand or potentially serve as an umbrella for future blockchain initiatives within Western Union’s developing Digital Asset Network.

Analysts See Stablecoins as an Opportunity for Remittance Providers

Earlier this week, the company confirmed plans to launch USDPT in early 2026 through Anchorage Digital Bank, enabling users to send, receive, and hold stablecoins using Western Union’s global remittance infrastructure. The launch marks one of the firm’s most ambitious blockchain ventures since its 2018 pilot with Ripple.

Analysts at William Blair described the initiative as “a clear opportunity rather than a threat” for the remittance industry. In a note to clients, they emphasized that stablecoin-based settlement rails could lower transaction costs, enhance capital efficiency, and provide stability for users in inflation-prone or FX-volatile economies.

“We see a clear use case for USD-denominated stablecoin holdings by remittance receivers in high-inflation economies as a means to preserve purchasing power,” the analysts wrote. “Stablecoin-enabled solutions should also improve settlement speed and reduce pre-funding requirements across distribution partners.”

With the WUUSD filing and USDPT announcement coming back-to-back, Western Union appears to be accelerating its pivot toward blockchain-based payments – signaling a broader strategic shift from traditional money transfers to tokenized financial infrastructure.
