Thailand's SEC mandates the 'Travel Rule' for digital assets starting Feb 27, 2027, requiring data exchange for transfers and private wallet verification.

The new regulatory regime is set to take effect on February 27, 2027, bringing the local market closer to international anti-money laundering standards.

New Rules Reshape Exchange Transfer Protocols

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Thailand announced the “Travel Rule for Digital Assets” on September 2, following extensive consultations with the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO).

This initiative ensures that digital asset operators maintain sufficient information to assess risks and identify the use of crypto services in technological crimes.

The most significant shift requires information to follow the transaction itself. The originating operator must transmit data regarding both the sender and the recipient to the service provider receiving the assets.

These requirements also extend to intermediaries. Companies must now conduct due diligence on other digital asset service providers involved in a transfer and establish internal procedures to manage associated risks.

Stricter Oversight for Self-Custody Wallets

For crypto investors, the most tangible impact involves transfers between regulated platforms and self-custody wallets controlled by the users themselves.

When sending or receiving assets from such wallets, operators will be required to verify ownership or control. This adds a layer of scrutiny to the movement of funds between centralized exchanges and private addresses.

However, the regulation does not ban self-custody wallets. Instead, the requirement focuses on counterparty verification whenever a transfer involves a regulated operator.

Five-Year Data Retention Requirement

Companies are mandated to store transaction data for a minimum of five years. This information must be kept in a format that allows supervisory authorities to request and audit it quickly.

This policy increases the operational burden on exchanges and licensed providers. Beyond customer identification systems, they must maintain the infrastructure necessary to exchange, store, and monitor the data accompanying crypto transfers.

The SEC has provided nearly six months for preparation, with the rules officially becoming active on February 27, 2027.

Thailand Aligns Crypto Market with FATF Standards

The regulator linked these changes to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) standards. These global benchmarks aim to apply identification and information exchange protocols to virtual asset transfers that mirror those used in traditional financial payments.

The Thai SEC conducted two rounds of public consultations in 2026, first addressing core principles in March and April, followed by the regulatory framework in June and July. According to the regulator, the majority of participants supported the proposals.

While the new regime increases compliance costs for local crypto firms, it simultaneously reduces the regulatory gap between digital assets and traditional financial infrastructure. For international platforms, this may simplify interactions with Thai operators. For users, it means transfers between exchanges and private wallets will now leave a significantly more detailed regulatory trail.

In an environment of market volatility, selecting a secure crypto wallet remains a priority for investors. For a detailed analysis of protection solutions, see the article “The Best Crypto Wallets for 2026”, which evaluates options based on security and functionality.
