Swift Teams Up With Linea for Blockchain Messaging Pilot
Swift, the world’s leading interbank messaging network, is stepping deeper into blockchain.
According to information from The Big Whale, the cooperative has selected Linea, an Ethereum Layer 2 developed by Consensys, to test an on-chain version of its messaging rails.
The initiative is still in early stages but already includes participation from more than a dozen global financial institutions, among them BNP Paribas and BNY. Sources close to the project said it will take several months before results are visible, but the long-term goal is a structural upgrade to the international payments system.
Swift currently handles payment instructions for over 11,500 banks and institutions worldwide, but its network remains heavily centralized and reliant on multiple intermediaries. Blockchain could streamline those bottlenecks while enhancing privacy through cryptographic proofs, one of the reasons Linea was chosen for the trial.
Swift has been testing blockchain use cases for years. In 2024 it previewed plans for live pilots in digital asset and currency settlement, with rollout expected in 2025. The Linea collaboration signals that those ambitions are moving forward, positioning Swift to adapt its legacy infrastructure for a more decentralized future.
