Hyundai slashed cross-border payment times from hours to seven minutes using USDT on Avalanche, signaling a shift in corporate liquidity management.

The recent test reveals how major corporations can accelerate cross-border transfers and reduce their reliance on traditional banking infrastructure, which often requires hours to process payments.

The pilot project was conducted between Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Motor Mexico. The U.S. division converted $20,000 into USDT and transferred the funds via the Avalanche blockchain, after which the Mexican entity exchanged them back into U.S. dollars. According to Hyundai, the entire process—from initiation to final confirmation—took approximately seven minutes, compared to the three to four hours typically required for a standard international bank transfer.

From Experiment to Real-World Corporate Application

Unlike many previous blockchain demonstrations, this project was designed as a practical test for daily corporate operations.

Hyundai emphasized that the process was built to comply with internal liquidity management rules, accounting standards, tax requirements, and regulatory compliance procedures.

The project was led by Hyundai Card, which developed the legal and financial framework for the operation. Other participants in the initiative included Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, the Avalanche blockchain, and payment infrastructure provider Axiym.

The company views this pilot as proof that digital assets can now be utilized outside of experimental environments and integrated into corporate cash flow management.

European Phase to Follow

Following the successful test, Hyundai is already preparing the second phase of the initiative, which will cover internal payments between the group’s European entities.

The new pilot will build upon the existing model by testing operations in Euros and British Pounds alongside U.S. dollar transfers. The goal is for the company to analyze potential savings on foreign exchange costs and evaluate how blockchain infrastructure can optimize international liquidity management.

For the European program, Hyundai plans to bring on new strategic partners, including Circle—the issuer of USDC—and Visa, demonstrating a drive to build a broader ecosystem for corporate digital payments.

Growing Corporate Interest in Blockchain

Hyundai’s initiative comes at a time when large international corporations are increasingly seeking ways to modernize their financial operations through blockchain technology and tokenized assets. For corporate finance departments, the primary incentive is not the speculative value of cryptocurrencies, but the potential for faster, cheaper, and 24/7 accessible international settlements.

Traditional cross-border bank transfers often pass through several correspondent banks, which increases costs and extends processing times. Using regulated stablecoins allows these processes to be shortened to minutes while simultaneously improving the traceability of every transaction.

While Hyundai’s project is currently limited to internal transfers between group companies, analysts describe the initiative as one of the most practical demonstrations of blockchain use in corporate liquidity management to date. If the upcoming tests in Europe confirm the expected savings and operational benefits, this model could gradually be adopted by other global companies looking for alternatives to traditional international banking settlements.
