Coinbase Secures UK License to Offer Stocks and Derivatives
Coinbase gains a new UK license to offer stock trading and derivatives, moving toward an 'everything exchange' model for 7 million British crypto owners.
The company plans to transform its platform into a universal investment environment, combining stocks, derivatives, savings products, and digital assets at a time when millions of Britons already own cryptocurrencies.
Coinbase expands its business beyond cryptocurrencies
With this new authorization, Coinbase can now officially offer investment services in the UK market, moving beyond the boundaries of a traditional crypto exchange.
The most significant change is that individual investors in the UK will gain access to stock trading directly through the Coinbase platform. Previously, the company primarily offered cryptocurrencies, but the new license allows it to integrate traditional financial instruments.
For more active and institutional clients, Coinbase will also expand its derivatives offering, including perpetual futures on cryptocurrencies, stocks, and commodities.
The new license complements the company’s existing UK authorizations, including its registration as a crypto service provider and its electronic money license, enabling nearly all financial services to be consolidated into a single platform.
The company bets on an “all-in-one” model
This product portfolio expansion is part of Coinbase’s broader strategy to become an “everything exchange”—a platform that merges banking services, investments, lending, savings products, cryptocurrencies, and traditional capital markets.
According to the company, the goal is to eliminate fragmentation in financial services, where users currently rely on separate applications for banking, stocks, crypto assets, and savings.
In recent months, Coinbase has already introduced new savings and lending products in the UK, alongside integrations with stablecoin-based investment solutions. Obtaining this license allows the strategy to be built upon with direct access to traditional capital markets.
The UK remains a key crypto market
The expansion comes as British regulators gradually establish a broad framework for digital asset regulation. While the full regime for the crypto industry is expected to take effect in October 2027, the new license allows Coinbase to begin offering traditional investment services immediately.
According to the latest survey by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), over 7 million Britons—approximately 12% of the adult population—already own cryptocurrencies. The study also reveals that 25% of people who do not yet invest in crypto would be more likely to enter the market if a clearer and more stable regulatory framework were in place.
These figures suggest that the UK remains one of the most promising markets for companies that successfully combine regulatory compliance with a wide range of financial services.
Competition between crypto exchanges enters a new stage
With this latest license, Coinbase takes another step toward a model where crypto exchanges evolve into full-fledged financial institutions. Rather than competing solely through new token listings or lower trading fees, leading platforms now aim to provide a complete investment ecosystem.
The trend highlights an increasing convergence between traditional financial markets and the crypto industry. If Coinbase’s strategy proves successful, British investors will be able to manage portfolios of stocks, cryptocurrencies, derivatives, and savings products through a single platform—a model that is rapidly becoming the new standard for major global exchanges.
