BounceBit to Shut Down L1 Chain Following $3M Exploit
BounceBit will permanently shut down its L1 chain after a $3M exploit, migrating BB tokens to BNB Chain using a pre-attack snapshot to restore balances.
Instead of attempting to repair its compromised network, the project will reissue BB as a BEP-20 token on the BNB Chain, utilizing balance data recorded prior to the attack.
Authorization Logic at the Root of the Breach
According to reports from Protos, the incident did not stem from compromised private keys or user wallets. BounceBit stated that the attacker exploited a vulnerability within the Evmos-based network, allowing them to move BB from nine separate profiles without the required authorization.
This distinction is critical. While a private key theft is typically isolated to specific wallets, a protocol-level flaw challenges the very rules by which the network validates operations. This fundamental breach explains why BounceBit opted for a more drastic solution than a simple patch and restart.
BounceBit Abandons Network Restart Plans
The company plans to permanently decommission the BounceBit Chain and migrate the BB token to the BNB Chain.
The migration will rely on a snapshot of balances taken before the exploit. This data will determine the number of new BEP-20 tokens each legitimate holder is entitled to receive.
This strategic shift allows BounceBit to effectively nullify the attack’s impact:
- The 286.5 million BB moved by the attacker will not be transferred to the new contract;
- Balances will be restored to their pre-exploit state;
- BB will continue to exist, but without its own Layer 1 infrastructure;
- Security and settlement for the token will now be handled by the BNB Chain.
By doing so, the token’s economic history remains intact up to the snapshot, while the consequences of the unauthorized transfers are severed during the migration.
CeDeFi and RWA Businesses Remain Unaffected
The decision to shut down the Layer 1 network does not signal the end of the entire BounceBit business model.
The company confirmed that its CeDeFi, Prime, and RWA products were not impacted by the exploit. This separation is vital for the project’s future strategy, as the native blockchain will no longer serve as the mandatory infrastructure for its other offerings.
BounceBit initially built much of its identity around a CeDeFi model that paired centralized infrastructure with on-chain yield mechanisms. Moving away from a native Layer 1 shifts the project’s focus more heavily toward financial products rather than the maintenance of a base-layer network.
Project Backed by Major Crypto Funds
BounceBit secured $6 million in funding in 2024 through a round co-led by Blockchain Capital and Breyer Capital. Other participants included OKX Ventures and HTX Ventures.
The project later received a separate investment from Binance Labs, the venture arm of Binance, which was subsequently rebranded as YZi Labs.
While this capital initially funded the development of native Layer 1 infrastructure, the recent decision highlights the inherent challenges of such a strategy. Maintaining an independent blockchain forces a project to be responsible not just for its applications, but for consensus, validators, protocol logic, and base-layer security.
Migration to BNB Chain Restructures BB
Transitioning to the BEP-20 standard removes one of the most complex elements of the BounceBit ecosystem. Instead of managing its own Layer 1, BB will leverage the established network infrastructure of the BNB Chain.
For token holders, the technical specifics of the migration remain the priority. The snapshot must accurately separate legitimate balances from the 286.5 million BB moved during the exploit, and exchanges and counterparties will need to integrate the new contract.
The specific timing of the snapshot, the new BEP-20 contract address, and the user procedure will dictate the success of this transition. While the migration decision addresses the architectural dilemma, the operational recovery process is still ongoing.
