BitMEX is shutting down after 11 years. Discover the timeline for trading suspension and how to withdraw your funds before the 2026 deadline.

The decision follows a strategic business review and comes at a time when the crypto derivatives sector is dominated by significantly larger global competitors.

The End of a Pioneering Crypto Exchange

HDR Global Trading Limited, the owner and operator of the platform, announced its decision to wind down BitMEX operations following a strategic assessment of the company and the evolving crypto industry.

The exchange will remain active until September 23, 2026, at which point all trading services will cease. After this date, users will only be able to log into their profiles to check balances, view transaction history, and withdraw any remaining funds.

The company has already suspended the registration of new accounts.

Phased Trading Suspension

BitMEX will implement a phased closure process to mitigate the risk of market disruption.

Starting August 26, users will no longer be able to open new positions; they will only be permitted to reduce or close existing exposures. The company warned that it will begin forced closures of remaining positions before the final shutdown, and any trades left open at the time of suspension will be automatically liquidated.

Furthermore, contracts with lower liquidity will be settled early in accordance with the platform’s current procedures.

Users Urged to Withdraw Funds

The company recommends that all clients withdraw their assets as soon as possible.

For users who have completed Identity Verification (KYC) but leave funds on the platform after the deadline, a monthly fee of $50 or an annual fee of 1% of the remaining balance will be charged, whichever is higher. BitMEX warns that this fee may increase in the future if funds remain unclaimed.

The company added that it will continue to send notifications to affected users, urging them to move their assets.

Increased Security Checks on Withdrawals

BitMEX cautioned that the shutdown could lead to a surge in fraud attempts and phishing attacks targeting its customers.

Consequently, the exchange will apply additional security checks when processing withdrawal requests, which may cause delays for certain cryptocurrencies.

The company noted that on blockchains like Bitcoin, transaction confirmations can take significant time, which may temporarily limit processing speeds.

BitMEX assures users that it holds sufficient reserves to cover all client funds and that assets exceed liabilities, as evidenced by the company’s published Proof of Reserves.

The End of an Era in the Crypto Industry

Founded in 2014, BitMEX was among the first exchanges to popularize crypto derivatives trading and introduced 100x leverage for perpetual futures contracts—a product that subsequently became an industry standard adopted by much of the market.

Over the years, the platform established itself as one of the most influential players in the crypto derivatives sector before gradually losing market share to larger international competitors. By ceasing operations, BitMEX concludes over 11 years in the industry, becoming the latest early-stage crypto exchange to exit the market amid intensifying competition and a shifting regulatory environment.
