Kyrgyzstan has introduced a new stablecoin, KGST, pegged 1:1 to the national currency, the som, as part of a broader push into digital assets.

President Sadyr Japarov announced the launch following a meeting of the National Council for the Development of Virtual Assets and Blockchain Technologies, which also included Binance founder Changpeng Zhao.

This follows an earlier agreement between Zhao and the country’s National Investment Agency, signed in April, to collaborate on blockchain and crypto initiatives. Now, KGST is officially live, marking a major step in Kyrgyzstan’s digital asset strategy.

Alongside the stablecoin, the government revealed plans for a pilot digital som, the nation’s Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), to be tested in three stages: initially enabling transfers between the National Bank and commercial banks, then expanding to social and government payments via the Central Treasury, and finally allowing offline or low-connectivity transactions. The National Bank, which partnered with Build Block TECH to develop the CBDC, intends to scale the platform nationally once all phases are successfully completed.

President Japarov also called on the economy ministry to strengthen the legal framework for digital assets and asked the crypto council to submit proposals for a state cryptocurrency reserve within two months. Binance’s tokens will reportedly be included in the reserve, though details are still being finalized.

Kyrgyzstan has seen a rapid expansion of crypto activity, with $10 billion in transactions processed in the first half of 2025 alone — nearly half of the country’s 2024 annual volume. Officials said KGST will facilitate international settlements without double conversion and eventually integrate with the digital som, improving its utility for cross-border payments and remittances.

The move reflects Kyrgyzstan’s ambition to establish a robust digital financial ecosystem, combining stablecoins and a national CBDC to enhance domestic and international economic activity.
