XRP Whales Accumulate $3.8B Despite Market Cap Drop
On-chain data suggests that large XRP holders are doubling down on accumulation, even as the token’s market cap experiences heavy losses.
Analyst Ali Martinez reported that whales scooped up nearly 120 million XRP on August 15, coinciding with a sharp selloff that wiped $10 billion from the asset’s market value in just 24 hours.
Over the past week, XRP has shed nearly $15 billion from its August 8 peak, with spot prices sliding almost 8% to $3.08. Trading activity has also slowed, with daily volumes plunging 36% to $7.55 billion, reflecting a broader retreat by retail traders.
Despite this pullback, XRP’s fully diluted valuation remains elevated at $308.31 billion, signaling that longer-term adoption expectations remain intact. Whale accumulation has accelerated notably, with 320 million XRP acquired between August 12–14 and another 120 million on August 15. In total, roughly 440 million XRP – valued at $3.8 billion – has moved into major wallets in less than a week.
Historically, such periods of concentrated buying have preceded medium-term recoveries, particularly when paired with shrinking exchange reserves and thinner spot-market liquidity. With whales absorbing supply during this downturn, many analysts see their positioning as a potential buffer against retail-driven selling pressure.
Whether this wave of demand translates into a sustainable rebound may depend on broader crypto market sentiment, but for now, XRP’s largest holders appear to be quietly preparing for a reversal.
