Solana Governance to Vote on Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade
Solana’s community is preparing to vote on Alpenglow (SIMD-0326), a major consensus upgrade that could redefine the network’s performance and scalability.
The proposal has now entered the governance stage, with voting scheduled between epochs 840 and 842 (the current epoch is 834, each lasting about two days). For the proposal to pass, two-thirds of votes cast must be in favor.
A leap forward in finality speed
Alpenglow introduces a fundamental shift in Solana’s consensus design. By replacing the existing Proof-of-History (PoH) and TowerBFT mechanisms with a new architecture, the upgrade aims to reduce block finality time from the current 12.8 seconds down to just 100–150 milliseconds. Such an improvement would place Solana among the fastest finality blockchains in the industry.
At the center of this overhaul is Votor, a direct-vote protocol designed for resilience and efficiency. Depending on network conditions, Votor can finalize blocks in either a single or dual voting round. Instead of relying on heavy gossip traffic, validators exchange votes directly and use cryptographic aggregates to prove consensus.
Certification and bandwidth efficiency
Alpenglow also introduces a robust certification mechanism. Different types of certificates will be issued to notarize, skip, or finalize blocks, depending on validator participation and vote outcomes. This approach helps ensure blocks are processed with both speed and integrity, while maintaining resilience against network failures.
Another key benefit is improved bandwidth efficiency. By eliminating the need for extensive gossip communications that TowerBFT required, Alpenglow reduces overhead and improves validator synchronization.
Rotor to follow in later stages
While the current focus is on block finalization and voting logic, the proposal also outlines Rotor, a new data dissemination protocol that will be implemented in a later stage. Rotor is expected to further streamline how data moves across Solana’s network, complementing the speed improvements introduced by Votor.
