Coinbase and Moov Bring Stablecoin Payments to US Banks
Coinbase and Moov partner to enable stablecoin payments and custody for 1,000+ US community banks and credit unions through existing infrastructure.
This partnership is set to transform how smaller financial institutions enter the digital asset market. Instead of building proprietary blockchain payment technology, banks can leverage Moov’s existing infrastructure, now enhanced with Coinbase services. Moov currently serves over 1,000 local banks and credit unions across the U.S., connecting them to card payments, issuance, and instant transfer systems.
Coinbase will provide the digital asset infrastructure, while Moov integrates these capabilities into the payment systems financial institutions already use. This allows banks to add stablecoins to their existing product suites without the need to become independent crypto operators.
Coinbase Manages Custody and Fund Movement
Technical details show the partnership will utilize Custodial Wallet accounts from the Coinbase Developer Platform for asset storage, while the Payments API will orchestrate stablecoin movements. The infrastructure supports several use cases, including consumer payments, merchant stablecoin acceptance, business settlements, and payouts.
For corporate and merchant-related payments, Moov will also utilize fully disclosed Coinbase custodial accounts. This is a critical component of the model, as it allows local banks to maintain their direct customer relationships while Coinbase operates as the background infrastructure provider.
Banks Aim to Keep Payments Within the System
The economic stakes extend beyond simple stablecoin utility. As businesses increasingly use digital dollars for settlements, local banks that fail to offer these options risk losing customers to external platforms. Coinbase and Moov are betting on a model that keeps this activity within the primary banking relationship.
According to Moov, merchant payments and funding options that operate without weekend or holiday interruptions are particularly vital, as blockchain infrastructure runs 24/7. This places stablecoins in direct competition with traditional payment channels, which are often slower and restricted by standard banking hours.
Coinbase Expands Payment Business Beyond the Exchange
This deal aligns with Coinbase’s broader strategy to offer its infrastructure as a service for corporations and financial institutions. In June, the company reported processing nearly $1 trillion in annual stablecoin volume and holding approximately $20 billion in USDC on its platform. Additionally, the Base network had processed $19 trillion in stablecoin volume year-to-date at the time of the announcement.
By offering this infrastructure via APIs for payments, custody, and token issuance, Coinbase is gradually shifting its business model from a pure cryptocurrency exchange toward becoming a foundational financial infrastructure provider.
Small Banks Join the Battle for the Digital Dollar
The partnership arrives as U.S. banks actively seek their place in the stablecoin market. The federal framework in the U.S. already permits banking institutions and credit unions to provide custody services for payment tokens and their associated private keys, provided it complies with applicable laws.
Simultaneously, major banks are accelerating their own initiatives. A consortium of 21 financial firms, including Bank of America, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs, is developing a proprietary stablecoin slated for a 2027 launch. For Coinbase and Moov, however, the more significant opportunity may lie with thousands of smaller institutions that lack the resources to build blockchain tech from scratch but want to prevent client payments from migrating to fintech and crypto platforms.
