Bitcoin nears $80,000 as ETF inflows hit $242 million
Bitcoin trades near $80,000 as spot BTC ETFs see $242M in daily inflows. Ethereum and Solana funds also show strong institutional demand despite market greed.
At the time of writing, Bitcoin (BTC) is trading at $79,772, marking a 0.34% increase over the last 24 hours and a 3.7% gain for the week. The total cryptocurrency market capitalization has reached approximately $2.68 trillion, while the Fear and Greed Index sits at 81 points, firmly within the “Extreme Greed” zone.
Altcoins are exhibiting even stronger momentum. Solana has climbed roughly 3.5% to $106.53, bringing its seven-day gains to over 17%. Hyperliquid is trading around $84.57, up 3.2% daily and nearly 15% for the week. Ethereum has lagged slightly, dipping 0.7% to $2,499, though its weekly performance remains in positive territory.
Bitcoin ETFs attract another $242 million
According to data from FarSide Investors, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net inflow of $242.3 million on August 27, extending a streak of positive sessions throughout the second half of the month.
BlackRock’s IBIT led the pack once again with $277.6 million in inflows. Bitwise’s BITB added $21.7 million, ARKB saw $29.7 million, and VanEck’s HODL brought in $5.7 million.
These gains were partially offset by an $83.6 million outflow from Fidelity’s FBTC and $27.2 million from Grayscale’s GBTC. This divergence suggests that capital is not merely entering the BTC ETF sector but is also being redistributed among various products.
This marks the eighth consecutive session of positive total flows, representing a sharp reversal from the series of outflows observed between August 10 and August 14.
Ethereum attracts nearly as much capital as Bitcoin
The Ethereum ETF market is sending an even stronger signal, with funds attracting a net $225.8 million on August 27.
BlackRock’s ETHA led with $130.2 million, followed by Fidelity’s FETH at $56.2 million and ETHB at $20.7 million. Consequently, Ethereum ETFs have recorded their eighth straight session without a net outflow, despite the asset’s relatively sluggish price action over the past 24 hours.
The disconnect between price and ETF flows is significant: institutional demand for Ethereum remains robust even on days when the token underperforms compared to Bitcoin and Solana.
Solana and Hyperliquid also gain institutional capital
Interest is no longer confined to the two largest crypto assets. Solana ETFs pulled in $56.1 million on August 27, their strongest daily performance in the recorded period. Of this total, $40.2 million flowed into Bitwise’s BSOL, while Fidelity’s FSOL and Grayscale’s GSOL added $5.8 million and $6.2 million, respectively.
Hyperliquid saw total daily inflows reach $24.4 million, with $23.2 million directed toward Bitwise’s BHYP. This aligns with the strong performance of HYPE, which ranks among the top-performing large-cap tokens this week.
XRP ETFs also remained in positive territory, though with a more modest net inflow of $12.99 million on August 27, per Coinglass data. The Bitwise XRP ETF recorded $8.56 million, while the Franklin XRP ETF saw $4.44 million.
Leverage increases alongside optimism
This positive outlook carries a riskier side. Open interest in the derivatives market has reached approximately $454 billion, with 24-hour trading volume hovering around $937 billion.
Daily liquidations totaled roughly $397 million, with short positions making up the majority at $235 million, compared to $162 million in long liquidations. This pattern is typical of a market where rising prices force traders betting on a decline to close their positions.
The combination of Bitcoin trading near $80,000, a Fear and Greed Index of 81, and sustained ETF buying reveals a strong appetite for risk. However, high leverage makes the market increasingly sensitive to sudden shifts in direction, particularly following the significant weekly gains seen in Solana, Hyperliquid, and other altcoins.
