Charles Hoskinson Warns Bitcoin Must Evolve for Quantum Age

Quantum Computing May Force Fundamental Changes
Charles Hoskinson believes that a potential breakthrough in quantum computing would necessitate deep changes to the leading cryptocurrency’s protocol, including a shift to post-quantum cryptography.
Such a migration would require coordinated software updates and potentially a hard fork. This process would need the full support of developers, miners, exchanges, and all other participants within the ecosystem.
According to Hoskinson, this specific coordination process represents the greatest challenge for the network.
A “Frozen” Governance Model
Hoskinson described Bitcoin’s governance model as extremely cautious and resistant to change.
He noted that while this has been one of the network’s greatest strengths over the last decade, the same conservative approach may become a disadvantage if technological shifts demand rapid decision-making.
He warned that if quantum technology advances faster than Bitcoin can build consensus around necessary changes, the leading cryptocurrency could gradually lose its dominant market position.
Cardano as an Alternative Model
Hoskinson contrasted Bitcoin with Cardano, where a significant portion of governance decisions are made through on-chain voting mechanisms.
He argues that such a structure allows for faster adoption of large-scale infrastructure changes, including the implementation of new cryptographic algorithms when the need arises.
In his view, the ability of a blockchain to adapt will be the deciding factor during an eventual transition to post-quantum security.
2033 Emerges as a Critical Milestone
Hoskinson reiterated his earlier prediction that there is a greater than 50% probability that commercial quantum computers capable of compromising current cryptographic algorithms will appear by 2033.
While this scenario remains uncertain, he believes the blockchain industry must begin preparing early. This includes a gradual transition toward post-quantum cryptography standards that align with recommendations from the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
According to Hoskinson, the speed at which individual networks can execute this transition could become a primary factor in determining leadership within the crypto industry over the next decade.
