Ethereum: VanEck Explains Why Fusaka Upgrade Could Be a Game-Changer
Ethereum is preparing for its next major milestone, the Fusaka upgrade, slated for December, and analysts at VanEck believe it could transform the network’s efficiency and cost structure.
In its latest market commentary, the asset manager highlighted Fusaka as a breakthrough in Ethereum’s scaling journey. The update directly targets the network’s most pressing issue: data availability for rollups, the layer-2 solutions that bundle thousands of transactions before anchoring them on Ethereum.
PeerDAS and Cheaper Rollups
At the heart of Fusaka is Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS), a method that lets validators check blocks by sampling small chunks of data instead of downloading everything. VanEck explained that this dramatically reduces bandwidth and storage pressure, paving the way to safely expand Ethereum’s “blob” capacity, the special data slots used by rollups.
With demand for rollup block space surging, this is crucial. Coinbase’s Base network and Worldcoin’s World Chain already account for around 60% of all rollup data, showing how critical L2s are to Ethereum’s growth. By enabling more blobs, Fusaka could lower operating costs for rollups, which should flow down to cheaper user transactions across decentralized apps.
Rethinking ETH’s Role
VanEck also emphasized that Fusaka signals a deeper shift in Ethereum’s economy. As rollups handle more activity, the base layer collects less direct fee revenue. But this doesn’t weaken ETH, the firm argues, it strengthens its role as the security backbone of the rollup ecosystem. Each transaction ultimately settles back on mainnet, reinforcing ETH’s value as a monetary and settlement asset.
However, VanEck cautioned that holders who don’t stake ETH face long-term dilution as institutions, including ETF providers and corporate treasuries, increase their staked positions to earn yield. In that light, the upgrade enhances Ethereum’s institutional case by ensuring low-cost, scalable rollup infrastructure.

While technical challenges remain, VanEck concluded that Fusaka is a pivotal moment in Ethereum’s roadmap. By optimizing data availability and strengthening its rollup-centric architecture, the upgrade could reshape both user experience and ETH’s long-term value proposition.
For investors and developers alike, December’s Fusaka launch may mark the start of a new phase, one where Ethereum’s scaling vision becomes increasingly tangible.
