Vitalik Buterin Unveils LeanVM Proposal as Ethereum Scaling Roadmap Advances
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has praised the progress of the network’s development teams, highlighting fresh advances aimed at securing long-term scalability, decentralization, and resilience.
One of the most notable updates is a new concept called leanVM, a minimal zkVM designed for efficiency. The proposal focuses on XMSS aggregation and recursion, while relying on a simplified four-instruction ISA. Unlike Cairo, leanVM incorporates multilinear STARKs and logup lookups, which are expected to cut commitment costs substantially.
The lean Ethereum team has been doing a truly amazing job kicking into gear this year, and delivering on all fronts to ensure Ethereum's long-term scaling, decentralization and resilience.
I expect all of these ideas will be ready to kick into gear at roughly the same time as… https://t.co/4uimhAZI5N

Alignment with Ethereum’s roadmap
Buterin emphasized that the lean Ethereum team has “kicked into gear” this year, delivering across multiple fronts. He believes the innovations surrounding leanVM and other ideas will be ready to roll out in sync with the short-term scaling roadmap, which is approaching key milestones.
Broader context
Ethereum’s scaling roadmap has long balanced immediate upgrades with long-term structural improvements. The introduction of leanVM underscores the push to refine the network’s infrastructure, supporting the ultimate vision of a more secure, decentralized, and cost-efficient blockchain.
