XRP Ledger Developers Propose Firewall Upgrade to Combat Scams
The XRP Ledger is preparing for one of its most ambitious security-focused upgrades yet, aimed at curbing the growing wave of phishing scams, fake airdrops, and wallet breaches that have plagued the ecosystem for years.
Introducing XLS-86 Firewall
Dubbed the XLS-86 Firewall, the proposal introduces a new layer of defense designed for both retail and institutional users. Unlike many past solutions that demanded advanced technical know-how, this system is built for accessibility. At its core, it allows users to set transaction rules that restrict how funds leave their accounts – either by time-based delays or value thresholds.
If a hacker were to gain access to a wallet, these restrictions would prevent an immediate sweep of funds, giving owners critical time to react. The firewall also includes a whitelist feature, letting everyday payments to trusted addresses bypass the extra friction. This balance between stronger security and convenience could make the tool widely adopted compared to traditional multisignature setups, which remain effective but often too complex for everyday users.
Optional but powerful
Importantly, the firewall won’t be mandatory. Holders can choose to activate it and customize their preferred level of protection. This opt-in approach allows for flexibility, making it appealing to both casual XRP investors and businesses managing larger accounts.
Why it matters now
The push for this upgrade comes at a time when scams targeting XRP holders are intensifying. Ripple CTO David Schwartz recently flagged a fraudulent airdrop scheme as the latest example of how attackers exploit unsuspecting users. Without on-chain protections, compromised private keys can result in wallets being drained within seconds.
By embedding customizable transaction safeguards directly into the ledger, developers hope to shift that dynamic – giving users not just ownership of their funds, but also meaningful control over their security. If implemented, the XLS-86 Firewall could mark a turning point in how the XRP Ledger defends its community against evolving threats.
It's over for many scammers.
XLS-86 Firewall is an amendment for the XRP Ledger that is in development.
It will finally eliminate you losing your XRP, Tokens and NFTs entirely if you use this functionality.
Given the victims we have had in the past, i can't wait for it!
