Ethereum Launches Onchain Time Capsule to Mark 11th Anniversary in 2026

A community-driven initiative launched Monday is inviting Ethereum users to lock art, memories, and personal messages inside a decentralized “time capsule,” set to be opened on the network’s 11th anniversary next year.

Unveiled at the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), the project is supported by the Protocol Guild and Shutter Network, and aims to preserve user-submitted content on Ethereum’s blockchain using encrypted smart contracts. The capsule allows participants to submit files for a fee of approximately $2.50 in ETH, with all proceeds going to the Protocol Guild to fund ongoing core Ethereum research.

Encryption Now, Decryption Later

The project uses threshold encryption technology from Shutter, ensuring that all content submitted before July 30, 2025, remains completely sealed and inaccessible until one year later. On Ethereum’s 11th anniversary in July 2026, the contract will automatically decrypt and permanently record each file onchain.

A Cultural and Historical Milestone

“Celebrating our history nurtures Ethereum’s culture and values,” said Jérôme de Tychey, founder of EthCC and president of Ethereum-France. The initiative serves as both a technical showcase and a cultural celebration of Ethereum’s evolution over the past decade.

Protocol Guild contributor “Cheeky Gorilla” described the capsule as a way to “reflect on progress as we gear up for the next decade,” reinforcing Ethereum’s long-term vision and community-driven ethos.
