Recent figures from the Federal Reserve reveal that the wealthiest Americans hold a significant share of the nation's total assets.
According to the latest data, the top 10% of U.S. households collectively possess an astounding $107.794 trillion in assets and entitlements as of the fourth quarter of 2024.
Breaking down the distribution, the upper 50% to 90% of Americans own $48.54 trillion, while those in the bottom half of the wealth spectrum hold just $4.01 trillion. The richest 0.1% alone control $22.14 trillion, while those in the 99% to 99.99% bracket account for $27.32 trillion. Meanwhile, Americans within the 90% to 99% wealth percentile manage around $58.334 trillion.
Focusing on asset allocation, the wealthiest 10% heavily invest in corporate equities and mutual funds, with a staggering $40.84 trillion directed toward these financial instruments by the end of 2024. In contrast, those from the 50% to 90% wealth bracket, as well as the bottom 50%, primarily invest in real estate, collectively holding $26.99 trillion in property. Additionally, these groups maintain $5.99 trillion in stocks and mutual fund shares.
The Federal Reserve data also provides insight into household distribution within these wealth brackets. The elite top 0.1% consists of around 133,378 households, while approximately 1.198 million households fall within the 99% to 99.9% range. The wealthiest 90% to 99% segment includes about 11.992 million households. On the other hand, the 50% to 90% group comprises roughly 53.305 million households, and the bottom 50% accounts for about 66.646 million households.
These figures underscore the vast disparity in wealth distribution across the United States, highlighting how a small percentage of households control a significant portion of the country’s financial resources
