Players of the popular Telegram-based game Hamster Kombat are being targeted by phishing attacks, with scammers seeking to exploit the game’s viral popularity. Hamster Kombat has become one of the fastest-growing mobile games, attracting millions of new users daily.
Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky recently uncovered these phishing schemes. According to security expert Olga Svistunova, scammers are tricking players by promising to convert in-game coins to rubles through fraudulent links requiring Telegram login credentials.
Once users enter their credentials, attackers gain access to their personal accounts, enabling data theft, blackmail, and the sending of fraudulent messages.
These attacks primarily target players in Russia, but there is concern that fraudsters from other regions may adopt similar tactics.
Hamster Kombat has amassed 239 million users in just 81 days, with 4-5 million new users joining daily, making it one of the fastest-growing digital services globally, as noted by Telegram founder Pavel Durov.
Additionally, cryptocurrency scammers are exploiting the game’s popularity by offering fake Hamster Kombat airdrops, leading to fraudulent links designed to steal crypto wallet credentials. Kaspersky’s Svistunova highlighted that these scammers deceive users by claiming to sell Hamster cryptocurrency at a discount, ultimately aiming to gain access to their crypto wallets.
