Roger Ver, a well-known early Bitcoin advocate, has reached out to former President Donald Trump via Twitter, asking for assistance in preventing his potential extradition from Spain to the United States.
Ver, who could face up to 109 years in prison, is facing charges related to the failure to report capital gains from Bitcoin transactions in 2017, as well as allegedly underreporting the value of his Bitcoin holdings when he renounced his U.S. citizenship in 2014.
Notably, Ver is not currently a U.S. citizen, but the charges involve his actions during his time as a U.S. resident.
Despite his early role in the Bitcoin space, Ver later became an outspoken supporter of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), a fork of Bitcoin, after disagreements on Bitcoin’s scalability in 2017.
While Ver has faced legal troubles over the years, including accusations of tax evasion, it remains uncertain whether Trump, who has expressed support for cryptocurrencies, will take any steps to intervene in Ver’s legal situation, particularly given Ver’s non-citizen status.
The crypto market remains firmly in “Greed” territory, with CoinMarketCap’s Fear & Greed Index clocking in at 69/100 on July 19. Despite a modest 24-hour dip from 71, the index has now held above 60 for 11 consecutive days.
