Ethereum (ETH) has just triggered a golden cross against Bitcoin (BTC)—a technical pattern that has historically preceded massive altcoin rallies.
According to popular crypto analyst Crypto Rover, this is only the fifth time this bullish crossover has occurred on the ETH/BTC pair since 2019. Of the previous four instances, three resulted in explosive Ethereum price outperformance.
A golden cross is formed when a short-term moving average (usually the 50-day) crosses above a long-term moving average (typically the 200-day). In this case, the ETH/BTC chart on Binance shows the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) overtaking the 200-day SMA, a widely followed signal by technical traders that momentum is shifting.
Crypto Rover posted a comparative chart on July 27 highlighting how each of the past golden crosses—marked by yellow circles—led to significant upward moves in ETH compared to BTC. Only one instance failed to follow through, suggesting a strong historical bias toward bullish continuation.
The chart also reveals the magnitude of the gains that followed each successful signal. For example, the 2020 golden cross preceded Ethereum’s surge to new all-time highs. Similarly, the 2021 crossover sparked another parabolic phase.
What makes this latest signal intriguing is its timing. Ethereum has underperformed Bitcoin for much of 2024 and 2025, pushing the ETH/BTC ratio near multi-year lows. Now, with renewed ETF momentum and a spike in institutional ETH interest, some analysts believe a rotation from Bitcoin to Ethereum could be underway.
The golden cross could serve as a technical catalyst for such a shift—especially if supported by increased volume and broader market confidence. While skeptics warn that past performance doesn’t guarantee future results, sentiment among Ethereum bulls is clearly growing.
If history is any guide, ETH may be poised to regain dominance over BTC in the coming weeks. Traders and investors will now watch to see whether this technical signal proves predictive once again—or if 2025 breaks the pattern.
