Investigations revealed that the smart contracts themselves were not compromised. Instead, attackers gained access to the infrastructure used by the bridge\u2019s sole validator, allowing them to generate valid proof for a non-existent transaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier that same month, Drift lost another $285 million. According to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/lessons-from-the-drift-hack\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">analysis by Chainalysis<\/a><\/strong>, the attackers spent months building relationships with the team to eventually utilize pre-signed trades and gain administrative control. A fake asset was subsequently approved as collateral, enabling the withdrawal of real assets from the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both instances, the code executed instructions that appeared legitimate. The failure occurred earlier in the process when the attacker acquired the authority to submit or authenticate those instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compromised Access Can Render Audits Irrelevant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This shift fundamentally changes the economics of DeFi security. Traditional audits focus on identifying errors such as \u201creentrancy,\u201d flawed logic, manipulatable oracles, and other smart contract weaknesses. However, these audits cannot independently prevent administrative key theft, social engineering, or compromised infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KelpDAO serves as a prime example. The system utilized a single-validator configuration, creating a single point of failure. Once the underlying infrastructure was compromised, on-chain transactions appeared valid, and standard verification mechanisms failed to stop them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar pattern has emerged in smaller attacks throughout the year, including those targeting bridges and validator systems. The aggregate risk is shifting from whether the code is written correctly to how concentrated the management powers are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lazarus Linked to $575 Million in Losses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attacks on Drift and KelpDAO have been linked to North Korean threats, though the level of confirmation varies. For KelpDAO, Mandiant and CrowdStrike attributed the attack to North Korea, though the specific link to the TraderTraitor group was assessed with lower confidence. Regarding Drift, Chainalysis identified indicators consistent with previous DPRK operations, noting that final attribution remains under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two breaches account for roughly 44% of the reported $1.3 billion in total losses. This concentration illustrates why social engineering and the theft of privileged access have become more lucrative strategies than searching for complex vulnerabilities in publicly audited code.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Next Line of Defense Lies Beyond Smart Contracts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This trend is forcing security spending toward the infrastructure surrounding protocols. Multi-signature requirements, independent validators, restrictions on administrative operations, and time delays can mitigate damage even if a single key or account is compromised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the DeFi sector, this establishes a new standard for risk assessment.
