The world\u2019s largest corporate holder of Bitcoin, Strategy, is at risk of being removed from MSCI\u2019s equity indices, according to an announcement from the index provider. The move is feared to trigger billions in forced selling, and may be the root cause of crypto\u2019s extended decline.<\/p>\n

JPMorgan spotlighted the issue in a research note, warning that Strategy could face up to $2.8 billion in outflows if MSCI proceeds, and as much as $8.8 billion if other index providers follow suit.<\/p>\n

CEO Michael Saylor pushed back on Friday, arguing that Strategy is \u201cnot a fund, not a trust, and not a holding company,\u201d but an operational business fully eligible for MSCI inclusion. His response helped calm markets, with Bitcoin rebounding from $80,500 to $84,500 \u2013 though uncertainty still looms.<\/p>\n

Saylor Responds to MSCI Letter<\/h2>\n

The MSCI announcement<\/a> may have triggered the October 10 liquidation event, as smart money traders, attuned to its potentially dire ramifications, quickly exited positions, says crypto analyst Ran Nuener.<\/p>\n

MSCI\u2019s statement was published on October 10 at 08:34 GMT, and within hours, the Bitcoin price started to crater. This was the same day as the $19.2 billion liquidation event, which triggered a prolonged downturn for BTC and most altcoins.<\/p>\n

Nuener explained<\/a> that the Strategy\u2019s delisting from MSCI indices \u201cwould mean that all the pension funds, normal funds, and all other passive index holders would dump their MSTR automatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThe 10th of October wasn\u2019t a coincidence after all \u2013 It was smart money seeing a big risk to crypto and the current market structure.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the issue only became apparent to the broader market after JPMorgan analysts, led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou, noted in a Wednesday report that Strategy\u2019s share price had declined below its valuation premium, and suggested the root cause could be that MSTR may be dropped from key benchmark indices.<\/p>\n

This swiftly drew a response from Strategy CEO Michael Saylor, who wrote on X, \u201cWe\u2019re a publicly traded operating company with a $500 million software business and a unique treasury strategy that uses Bitcoin as productive capital.\u201d<\/p>\n

He argues that Strategy\u2019s 2025 investment product launches \u2013 $STRK, $STRF, $STRD, $STRC, and $STRE \u2013 represent the company is \u201ca new kind of enterprise\u201d \u2013 not just a passive fund or trust.<\/p>\n
