The findings<\/a><\/strong>, drawn from the ECB\u2019s Study on the Payment Attitudes of Consumers in the Euro Area (SPACE), show a clear shift in consumer behavior since previous surveys in 2019 and 2022, with payment habits evolving in favor of convenience and technology.<\/p>\n

Online and Card Payments See Broad Growth<\/h2>\n

In 2024:<\/p>\n

  • 21% of day-to-day payments were made online, up from 17% in 2022.<\/li>\n
  • By value, online payments rose to 36%, compared to 28% previously.<\/li>\n
  • Cards were the dominant instrument by value at the point of sale (POS), accounting for 45% of POS transactions.<\/li>\n
  • While cash still made up 52% of POS payments by volume, its share declined from 59% in 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Cash Dominates Small Purchases, P2P, and Privacy-Conscious Consumers<\/h2>\n

    • Cash remained the most-used method for low-value payments and P2P transactions, accounting for 41% of the latter.<\/li>\n
    • Among P2P alternatives, mobile apps and cards were used in 33% of cases, with credit transfers (9%) and instant payments (6%) making up the rest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Despite a decline in cash usage, 62% of consumers still consider having access to cash \u201cimportant\u201d or \u201cvery important.\u201d<\/p>\n
